TREATMENTS FOR FIBROIDS
Uterine fibroids don’t require a treatment if a women is not experiencing any symptoms. In such cases, “wait and see approach” is followed with constant follow-ups with the gynaecologist. But in cases where women is experiencing symptoms or in women with large fibroids some form of treatment will be required. If the main symptom of fibroids is painful menstrual periods then an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or meftal spas can be taken to ease the menstrual pain. It is necessary to consult your gynaecologist to be on a safer side.
NON- SURGICAL TREARTMENT FOR FIBROIDS:
- Tranexemic acid and hormonal preparations help in reducing excessive bleeding due to fibroids in some women.
- Placing a hormone-containing device (Mirena IUS) inside the uterine cavity also helps in relieving the symptoms due to heavy periods in women. However, these are not effective in all women.
- Blocking the blood supply to the uterus/fibroids by procedure like Uterine Artery Embolization can be a treatment option for older women who have no plans for future pregnancy.
- Thermal balloon ablation of pre-lining of the uterus also helps in reducing bleeding in some women.
SURGICAL TREARTMENT FOR FIBROIDS:
Surgical options are offered to the women with large fibroids and women suffering from fibroids related complications (Recurrent abortions, heavy prolonged mensuration, subfertility and before IVF). For older women with heavy periods following surgery options are available:
- MYOMECTOMY: This means removal of fibroids without removing the uterus. This treatment is suitable if you still have plans to have children. This treatment is done for women having large fibroids or fibroids causing symptoms.
- HYSTERECTOMY: This treatment is suitable to those women who have no plans for getting pregnant in future. It involves removal of the entire uterus. For older women hysterectomy would be preferred over myomectomy.
