What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which a tissue called endometrium (lining of the uterus) is found outside the uterus. The common sites at which this is found are the ovaries and the peritoneum found in pelvis. This abnormal location of the tissue causes period like blood collections wherever it is present and these along with the body’s response to these collections of blood are responsible for the problems caused by endometriosis.
Sign and Symptoms
Pelvic pain and infertility are the two major problems caused by endometriosis. Signs and symptoms include:
- Painful periods
- Painful sexual intercourse
- Pelvic pain in between periods
- Painful urination especially during mensuration
- Painful bowel movements
- Heavy bleeding during periods
- Abnormal back pain during mensuration
- Blood in urine and stool depending upon the location of the tissue
- Infertility
- If the woman conceives, then there are higher risks of miscarriage
Diagnosis of Endometriosis
It can be diagnosed by gynaecologist with the help of careful examination along with ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis or MRI of the abdomen and pelvis. However, the gold standard of diagnosis of endometriosis is by direct inspection and this is done by inserting a laparoscope (optical instruments) attached to a camera system inside the abdomen through a small incision. Hence laparoscopy is the best way to diagnose endometriosis in Gurgaon.
Laparoscopy procedure
You will be advised not to eat or drink for at least 8 hours before a laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is usually done under general anaesthesia and A Gynaecologist or surgeon performs the procedure.
For a laparoscopy, the abdomen is inflated with gas. The gas, which is injected with a needle, pushes the abdominal wall away from the organs so that the surgeon can see them clearly. The surgeon then inserts a laparoscope through a small incision and examines the internal organs. Additional incisions are used to insert instruments to move internal organs and structures for better viewing.
