What is sterilization?
Sterilisation is a permanent method of contraception. This means that the couple cannot have children after getting this procedure done. Female sterilisation is a surgical procedure and is suitable for people who are sure they do not want more children. This is one of the most widely used forms of birth control across the globe.
Sterilization Procedure
The sterilization of women is known as tubal sterilization. It involves removal or cutting or tying or clamping (by a clip) of fallopian tubes. Tubal sterilization prevents the sperm from reaching the egg.
How is tubal sterilization done?
This is done in three different ways.
- With a minilaparotomy
- With laparoscopy
- With hysteroscopy
How is laparoscopic sterilization performed?
Laparoscopic sterilization is highly effective. In this procedure the laparoscope is inserted through a small incision (5-7mm) made near the naval with another small cut made for the instrument that is used to cut or close the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes are closed/cut off by bands or clips. The incisions are thereby closed with stitches or special tapes.

- Laparoscopic sterilization is a very safe and convenient method of contraception that needs no add on measures to prevent pregnancy.
- The procedure has no effect on the menstrual cycle
- It is very effective form of contraception
- Recovery period is short
- Incisions made are very small and heal easily
- Risks and complications are rare.
- The procedure is done as a day care surgery and the patient can go home the same day.
What to expect after laparoscopic sterilization?
The patient is observed for a short time after the surgery. Usually 2 to 4 hours after the surgery, you can go home. You may feel some discomfort or have minor symptoms and discomforts that last a few days.
Mostly women return to their normal routine within a week after the surgery is done.
It is important to consider the surgery after a good thought and discussion with your partner. It is important to understand that this procedure is permanent and that there are many reversible methods of contraception available which are equally effective in preventing conception and pregnancy. You should not make this decision during times of stress.
