What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a procedure that helps a woman to get pregnant.
IVF PROCESS:
In this technique, the eggs of the woman are taken from the ovaries and they are fertilized using husband’s/partner’s sperm to create embryos in a laboratory. The embryos are then put in the woman’s womb in approximately 30% to 45% of cases the embryos will implant and grow as a pregnancy. It is a treatment commonly used to treat infertility and genetic problems.
Who should be Offered IVF?
There are times when IVF treatment is given as a primary treatment for women suffering from infertility and are of age 40 years and above. IVF can also be used if the woman or her partner is suffering from some health conditions like:
- Damaged fallopian tube: If the fallopian tube has a blockage then it is difficult for the egg to fertilize.
- Anovulation: As seen in woman with severe polycystic ovarian syndrome/ other causes of an ovulatory infertility- In this the egg production mechanism in the woman’s ovaries are not functioning well and other methods of correction of this dysfunction have failed.
- Endometriosis: This problem occurs when the lining of the uterine cavity (endometrium) grows outside the uterus and thus makes a woman infertile.
- Poor egg reserve in the ovaries: Seen in some women. The cause could be previous operative procedures on the ovaries or advanced maternal age etc.In these women also IVF gives better results than other sub fertility treatments.
- Impaired sperm production: The sperm that has average concentration or abnormalities in size and shape has inability to fertilize an egg.
- A genetic disorder: If your partner or you are at a risk of passing a disorder that is genetically inherited then you may candidates for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. This process involves IVF.
- Fertility preservation for cancer or other health conditions. If you’re about to start cancer treatment — such as radiation or chemotherapy — that could harm your fertility, IVF for fertility preservation may be an option.
SUCCESS OF IVF
Each time a woman has a cycle of IVF, there is 1 in 5 chance of getting pregnant. This chance decreases with increase in the age. Few females may need 5 cycles of treatment for success where as others may get pregnant with 1 or 2 cycles of IVF. The success of IVF is better on younger woman than on older ones. The chances of having a healthy baby using IVF is dependent on many factors like age of the woman and reason behind infertility.
