Polycystic Ovaries

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition seen in some women. It can cause period problems, impaired egg production from ovaries with resultant reduced fertility, excess hair growth, and acne. Many women with PCOS are also overweight.

PCOS is common. Research studies of women who had an ultrasound scan of their ovaries found that up to 1 in 4 young women have polycystic ovaries (ovaries with many small cysts).

The exact cause is not totally clear. Several factors probably play a part. These include -insulin resistance,Hereditary factors and being overweight or obese.

PCOS is diagnosed by an ultrasound of the pelvis along with the blood tests performed to assess the impact of this condition on the body systems.

Apart from its effects on egg production, periods & fertility,in women with PCOS, longterm effects can be an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy, a high cholesterol level, and possibly high blood pressure.

Treatment includes weight loss (if women who are overweight), and lifestyle changes in addition to treating the individual symptoms.

Infertility related to PCOS is evaluated and treated by medication along with dietary manipulation and lifestyle modification.Surgery in the form of laparoscopic ovarian drilling is sometimes offered to women not responding to medications alone.
